As we discussed, I think what lead him to it is the meat of the story, but the tension in the story might be where he is going. I thought Mind Thieves was very complicated because of the number of actors you were involving. Having just one actor definitely makes it more simple, but I would love to see you direct a scene with two people. Your idea of having the flashback be with the alcoholic and the person who lead him down this road is a good one. Bring the script on Friday for you to work on and others to comment on.
I do think that a "simpler" project like this will give you a lot more potential. I would love to see the script soon so post it up when you have a draft.
